Although cosmetic surgery is very popular, it can also pose serious risks to patients. Patients are often not informed about the risks, which can cause a lot of stress. There are inherent risks to surgery as it is an invasive procedure. These risks may be higher than others.
Vicarious experience
Vicarious trauma occurs when a person is exposed to traumatic events by a family member. Professional help can be provided to treat the experience. Friends and family can also be able to share their experiences and concerns. It may be difficult for people to share their feelings, but they should not take a loved one's reactions personally. They should maintain their daily routines, and contact family and friends.
Self-rated attractiveness
A study was done to determine if adolescents' self-rated physical attractiveness correlates with their psychological well-being. Participants were asked to rate their own physical attractiveness and self-reported levels of suicidal ideation and self-harm. The results showed that male adolescents considered themselves more attractive then their female counterparts. In girls, however, self-rated attractiveness was negatively associated with internalized distress. These associations had statistical significance only for girls and were only related to self-harm behavior and suicidal ideastion.
Religiousness
A new study found that religion has a significant impact on whether people are open to cosmetic surgery. Particularly, people who were more religious were less likely have cosmetic surgery than those who weren't. More research is needed to establish the relationship between religion and cosmetic surgery risk.
Household income
A study revealed a link between household income and the likelihood of undergoing cosmetic surgery. The results suggest that individuals with higher incomes are more likely to undergo this procedure than those with lower incomes. The Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics was used to measure gross household income by the researchers. It is a widely accepted method of assessing SES and has been shown to reflect health disparities among different socioeconomic groups.
Liquid silicone facial injections
While liquid silicone injections are a common cosmetic procedure, there are still risks. Some patients might experience temporary swelling or bruising. Some patients may experience serious complications, such as inflammatory reactions. Liquid silicone injections can also migrate to other parts of the body and cause permanent damage. In some cases, treatment may cause a heart attack.
Infections
Patients at high risk are those who have undergone cosmetic surgery. Although they are uncommon, infections can still occur even if antibacterial agents have been used. There are many microorganisms that can cause infections. They are usually caused by Staphylococci, streptococci or both. However, infections from non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTMs) have also been reported. These infections are often difficult to detect using standard Gram staining. They can also be resistant to common antibacterial drugs.
