A breast MRI scan uses a special contrast material to view the breast organs. This is a sensitive test for breast cancer. It is typically performed during a woman's period. The test will be most accurate during this time. A MRI scan can take several hours.

MRI is a sensitivity testing for breast cancer detection

MRI is a highly sensitive test that has the added benefit of detecting cancer in the contralateral breast. Its sensitivity and specificity are comparable to those of mammography. It was less sensitive in women at a 20% to 40% risk of developing breast cancer.

To perform an MRI of the breasts, the patient must lie down on a platform that has been specially designed. This platform has openings in order to accommodate the breasts without compression and contains the MRI electronics. For the best possible image, it is important that the patient remains still. To achieve the best image, the patient must relax his or her muscles and be comfortable. If an MRI is uncomfortable for the patient, the technician may be able to tell them so that they can adjust.

It uses a contrast medium in order to display the organs.

Contrast medium is used in breast mri. This makes the organs and tissue of the body visible in the image. The contrast material is known as a gadolinium Ion and is injected through an IV catheter line. The contrast agent will not alter the color of any organs or bones.

Contrast MRI improves detail in an image which can help doctors spot abnormal tissue. MRIs are also useful in monitoring the progress of treatment for a particular type of cancer. Breast MRIs do not require radiation. They are noninvasive. Based on the patient's symptoms and medical history, a doctor may order this test. Breast MRI can be a valuable diagnostic tool in women at risk of developing breast carcinoma. It can answer questions other tests might not be able.

It's performed during menstrual cycles

The optimal time for breast MRI depends on the woman's menstrual cycle and breast composition. The study examined the optimal timing of breast MR examinations in 238 women. The women's breasts were analyzed using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRIs. After the contrast injection, the enhancement of normal parenchyma level was measured in two- and six-minute intervals. Also included were women with dense breasts.

Breast MRI examinations should be performed during the second and third weeks of the menstrual cycle. This will minimize false-positive findings and non-diagnostic ones. Women with pre-menstrual cycles should avoid MRIs performed during this period.

It is most accurate in the first half of the menstrual cycle

For the best accuracy, MRI should be performed on the breast between the first and second stages of your menstrual cycle or within four to sixteen days of the start of your period. However, women can undergo MRI at any time after menopause or after the diagnosis of breast cancer.

It can also be used in determining the extent and type of breast cancer.

A breast MRI can be used to diagnose breast cancer. A breast MRI is a diagnostic imaging tool that can detect the extent and size the cancer. The MRI results are useful for planning surgical procedures. It has been proven to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce the rate of recurrence. The MRI procedure can have delays and risks.

Breast MRI is a method that detects early breast cancer. This method, when combined with mammography/clinical breast examination, is 99 percent sensitive and 94% specific. Breast MRI has the highest sensitivity among all three screening methods.
